Do I have to be of African descent to fill my place with Ankara fabric?

No, but we’re glad you asked! Technically, we all came from Africa (but that’s a whole other story). But you are right, fabric carries meaning and sometimes it can represent cultural or ethnic identities. The history of Ankara fabric is different from other textiles, like Kente from Ghana. Ankara has been embraced by the African fashion industry and widely appreciated for its colorful and inventive designs that embrace modernity in all of its local and global complexity. It was first known as “Dutch Wax” and marketed to Africans by European textile dealers and then later produced on the continent. Today, the cloth that is thought of as “African” is produced in Africa, Europe, and Asia! Learning a bit about that history wouldn’t hurt and it’s really interesting!
